Cursive

Now Playing:

“The Recluse”

"The Recluse" is one of our most low-key songs; the challenge of writing this song was to KEEP it low-key - we have a tendency to write with peeks and valleys, always using dynamic, so writing "statically" (as simple as that may sound) is a bit of a struggle for us.

The Session:

Cursive

About:
I'll be honest. Before they came into our studio a few weeks back, I'd never listened to Cursive... in fact, I don't think I'd ever actually heard them before. Obviously, I've been aware of the band for years. It was near-impossible to not read a glowing review of their '03 LP, The Ugly Organ. Even before such, they've always popped up in the indie rock rags I've picked up for well over a decade. And of course back in college, there were those kids that were seemed a little too over-obsessed with the band. We never seemed to get along, me and "those kids"... perhaps that's what had kept me from picking up one of their records. It's always the fans, isn't it?

But, hey now, no regrets. Despite being a bit late to the game, I'm certainly now a fan of these guys. I've started with their current Saddle Creek release, Mama, I'm Swollen, and will be working my way into their past output. Hopefully, their older records with tread the same sonic planes of fuzz-tone mayhem that come crashing down into hushed silences, only to crescendo back up into more volume and noise. Maybe frontman Tim Kasher's cracked croon and wildman howl are a product of almost 15 years of playing the indie rock game. Did he sound different back in the day? Eh, it doesn't really matter, really. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love it.

The whole thing is, well, a bit bittersweet. On one hand, I've got a "new" band with a deep catalog to explore and fawn over. Then again, part of me is like, "you could have been down with this for the past ten years! What the hell have you been listening to, boy?". It's always complicated isn't it? Oh well, I just hope Cursive still get a decent cut from their back catalog sales, as I plan to track it all down with the next couple pay checks.

Cursive is the real deal, y'all. I hope you enjoy their Lake Fever Session.
